§. 4. Bey folgendem Exempel glauben einige Bezifferer, daß es genug sey, wenn sie nach der  ,  setzen, weil hierdurch die Fortschreitung dieser zwey Ziffern angedeutet wird (a): allein ein Ungeübter kann zu dieser gar leicht die Octave, nach der Regel des Sextquartenaccordes greifen, anstatt, daß die Terz dazu gehört. Die Bezifferung dieses Exempels bey (b) ist richtiger und deutlicher, ohngeachtet das Auge eine Ziffer mehr zu übersehen hat.

In the following example at (a), some believe that it suffices to write after the , because the progression of these two figures is thus indicated (a); yet the unpracticed player can easily grab the octave to this according to the rules for the chord, instead of the third. The figuring of this example at (b) is better and clearer, even though the eye must account for an additional figure.
